Brevard Family Partnership Receives Grant from Community Foundation of Brevard \u2013 Funding to help children aging out of foster care obtain high school diplomas<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

MELBOURNE, FL \u2013 Brevard Family Partnership (BFP) has been awarded a grant from the\u00a0Community Foundation of Brevard<\/a>\u00a0to provide supplemental educational services to youth who have aged out of foster care so that they may acquire their GED and pass the FCAT.\u00a0 The award was presented at a Grant Award Ceremony on September 1, at the Space Coast Early Intervention Center in Melbourne.<\/p>\n

In BFP\u2019s Making Connections program, young adults will be provided supplemental GED and FCAT preparation services, as well as adult mentoring.\u00a0 In return, those in the program would agree to be trained as \u201cpeer mentors\u201d and provide mentoring and encouragement to others in foster care.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe that the benefit to the participants would be two-fold,\u201d said Brevard Family Partnership\u2019s COO,\u00a0Jim Carlson<\/a>. \u201cBy accomplishing the goal of achieving a high school diploma those in the program would realize that if they put their efforts and energies toward something, they are capable of success.\u00a0 Then, as peers to other youth in similar situations, they can encourage and motivate them to succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe currently interact with and support 80 young adults between the ages of 18 and 23 who have spent six months or more in foster care and now have aged out of the system,\u201d Carlson said.\u00a0 \u201cDue to adversities in life many of them have not attained a high school diploma.\u00a0\u00a0 It is a state requirement and one of our primary goals to ensure that those aging-out of the system (turning 18 years old without having returned to the care of their parents or being adopted) have the education, as well as the basic life-skills necessary to live and thrive on their own.\u00a0 The more we can do to help them enter adulthood with the tools and skills they need the better chance they have of becoming a successful member of their community\u201d<\/p>\n

Brevard Family Partnership works with youth and young adults through its \u201cIndependent Living\u201d and \u201cRoad to Independence\u201d programs -and in partnership with Connected by 25- to prepare youth for adulthood and life after foster care.\u00a0 Training and education includes but is not limited to: financial literacy training, household management, and educational and career planning.\u00a0 There also are several services that he or she can access, including: transportation, tuition assistance, housing and housing assistance, as well as emotional support.<\/p>\n
